Our Story

FAH was founded in 2015 as a result of recommendations put forward by a distinctive group of global leaders – including His Excellency, Hailemariam Dessalegn, Former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Her Excellency President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Ray Chambers, Joy Phumaphi, Tim Evans, Paul Farmer, Chelsea Clinton, and Jeff Walker – in Addis Ababa at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development.

We’ve known for years that investing in Community Health is one of the most cost-effective, scaleable and impactful solutions for delivering life-saving health services to the most difficult to reach and vulnerable populations on the African continent.

However, funding for community health systems remains a challenge, with the current annual funding gap estimated at US$ 4.4B+

That’s where the Financing Alliance for Health comes in: We bridge the worlds of Health and Finance to enable new and additional investments in health systems with community health at their core.
FAH aligns stakeholders toward a common vision: one where the country’s investments catalyze additional funding from public and private sector partners.

Align multiple stakeholders towards a common vision

Co-develop effective community health strategies and less fragmented modalities to finance them

Advocate for the prioritization and more effective financing

Build the health financing capabilities of government and global health stakeholders to ensure evidence based resource allocation

‘’Ethiopia’s Community Health Extension Workers have been essential in our progress to bring healthcare to the poor and marginalized and fight the top killers of mothers and children across our country. We are delighted to co-lead this effort and fully endorse the findings of this report’’
