Across sub-Saharan Africa, over 50% of the population (600 million people) still lacks access to essential health services.
Each year, 16 million people are pushed into poverty due to out-of-pocket health spending.
Maternal mortality is 136x higher than in high-income countries. 1 in 13 children dies before age five.
At the heart of this crisis is a financing challenge. African health systems rely heavily on short-term, donor-funded programs. Meanwhile, out-of-pocket payments make up 40–56% of total health spending — the highest globally.
The Financing Alliance for Health (FAH) is mobilizing $1 billion to bridge the community health financing gap and strengthen broader primary health systems — building sustainable financing that protects the most vulnerable.
