The Kenyan government has made a strong political commitment to achieve Universal Health Coverage by 2022, as expressed in the government’s Big Four Agenda, which includes health care for all as a key development priority. In addition, Kenya is a signatory to the Astana Declaration (2018) which highlights the importance of community health services in advancing UHC.
While there is evidence showing significant improvements in maternal and child health, the Kenyan population continues to suffer from high rates of infectious diseases, partly attributed to inequity in access to basic health services.
Community health has been proven to level out such inequities in health access but community health systems face challenges such as inadequate financing, insufficient numbers and a poorly motivated community health workforce.
FAH continues to support the national and county governments of Laikipia, Tharaka Nithi, Makueni, Nyeri, Nakuru and Nairobi in laying the groundwork for robust resource mobilization efforts to bolster their community health programs. Thus far:
- FAH has supported the national government in resource mobilization through Global Fund and/or Global Financing Facility application.
- FAH has supported community health strategy co-development, with Ministries of Health at both national and county governments of Laikipia, Tharaka Nithi, Makueni, Nyeri and Nakuru
- Through FAH support, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia and Makueni governments in Kenya collectively secured ~KES 230M (US$ 2.3M) for community health spending
- FAH has trained ~80 diverse stakeholders on public financial management as a foundational step towards resource mobilization for community health
